Norton McCoy was exposed to massive amounts of radiation while working at a nuclear power plant, which affected his genes. As a result, Norton’s son, Henry “Hank” McCoy, was born a mutant with abnormally large hands and feet from birth. Hank’s ludicrous appearance was ridiculed by his classmates as a kid, earning him the pseudonym “Beast.” Jennifer, a classmate, got to understand the true Hank after he began tutoring her in Biology. Jennifer insisted on having Hank accompany her as her date to the junior prom, and she stood up for him when he was bullied and ridiculed.
Hank was a star student who completed his doctoral studies under Xavier’s tutelage, before getting a degree first from Xavier School to work as a genetic researcher for the Brand Corporation under Doctor Carl Maddicks. Hank discovered the hormonal extract that causes genetic mutation during one of his experiments and went to inform Maddicks of his discovery. Hank took the extract to disguise himself and underwent radical physical changes that increased his agility and strength while also causing him to grow fangs, pointed ears, and fur all over his body. He was now a beast in both name and deed. He initially tried to conceal his mutation with a latex mask and gloves, but he eventually learned to accept his new appearance.
